Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Leeuwarden

The capital of the Dutch province of Friesland, Leeuwarden, serves as your first overnight destination on the island-hopping tour through the Netherlands. Upon checking in at your hotel, take the opportunity to explore the charming old town by bike. Leeuwarden is entirely encircled by a picturesque canal, enhancing its scenic beauty. A must-see is the iconic, leaning De Oldehove, an unfinished church tower. From its summit, you will be treated to a splendid panoramic view of the city.

Day 2

Leeuwarden – Sneek

approx. 50 km

The first stage of your bike tour throught the Netherlands takes you to Bolsward. It is a quaint pilgrimage town originally built on three terps. While there, be sure to visit the Sonnema Berenburg distillery and sample the renowned herbal bitters. From Bolsward, continue to Sneek, famous for its iconic water gate. Located in the heart of the Frisian Lake District, Sneek and its surrounding areas are a haven for water sports enthusiasts. The nearby Sneekermeer, formed during the Middle Ages through peat extraction, now provides an abundance of opportunities for recreational boating and water activities. Don't miss the chance to embark on a scenic boat trip!

Day 3

Sneek – Rijs / Stavoren / Oudemirdum

approx. 50 – 60 km

Today, you will make your way towards Lake IJssel, passing numerous lakes along the way and immersing yourself in the tranquillity and timeless beauty of the Frisian water landscape. As you approach your destination in Rijs, the vast expanse of Lake IJssel will unfold before you. With sheep grazing along the dykes, the invigorating sea air, and a clear view stretching into the distance, you will be captivated by the idyllic atmosphere. Take a leisurely walk near the lake, and perhaps indulge in a peaceful evening picnic with a stunning view of the sea.

Day 4

Rijs – Makkum

approx. 25 – 35 km

Following the coast of Lake IJssel, your journey takes you first to the harbour town of Stavoren, once the bustling home port of Frisian kings and sailors. A few kilometres further north, Hindeloopen offers a perfect spot for a stopover. Its many attractions, distinctive house gables, and charming wooden bridges all stand as reminders of the town’s former glory as a thriving trading hub. Your overnight stay in Makkum is equally captivating. Here, be sure to visit the Koninklijke Tichelaar, the oldest earthenware factory in the Netherlands, which has been crafting fine pottery since 1640.

Day 5

Makkum – Harlingen

approx. 50 km

From Makkum, you will cycle along the shores of Lake IJssel for a while today. On your left, the 32-kilometre-long Afsluitdijk stretches out, separating Lake IJssel from the Wadden Sea. Your destination, the historic harbour town of Harlingen, is especially notable for its impressive collection of over 600 monuments. With its charming old houses, characteristic canals, and bustling harbours, it is no wonder the town is so captivating. You will be able to relax and settle in comfortably at your hotel in Harlingen, where you will spend three nights.

Day 6

Excursion to the Island of Vlieland, cycling route by choice + ferry trip

What would a cycle tour in Friesland be without a visit to the Wadden Islands? The next stop is island hopping to the car-free island of Vlieland. It is, easily accessible by ferry from Harlingen and features almost 26 kilometres of cycle paths inviting you to explore the smallest of the West Frisian islands at your own pace. The landscape is a picture of tranquility, with towering dunes, expansive sandy beaches, and small wooded areas.  Pay a visits to the island's only village, Oost-Vlieland, and the Tromp's Huys. The oldest house on Vlieland now serves as a museum, offering insights into the island's fascinating history. For stunning views, climb the Vuurboetsduin, a 40-metre-high wooded dune topped with a lighthouse.

Day 7

Excursion to the Island of Terschelling, cycle route by choice + ferry trip

Experience the serene tranquillity of another West Frisian Wadden island. As you disembark the ferry, the first sight that will catch your eye is the majestic Brandaris lighthouse, standing proudly in the harbour town of West-Terschelling. The island boasts a 30-kilometre-long, up to 500-metre-wide sandy beach, easily accessible by bike. Whether you’re relaxing in the sun, listening to the soothing sounds of the sea, or enjoying stunning views of the North Sea, the beach offers an idyllic retreat. For those seeking a more active experience, a mudflat hike is highly recommended—just be sure to wear sturdy footwear! With a bit of luck, you may even spot a group of sunbathing seals on one of the sandbanks.

Day 8

Harlingen – Dokkum

approx. 60 km

Today, you bid farewell to the sea as you venture a few kilometres inland to reach Franeker. Here, on Eise Eisingastraat, named after the amateur astronomer, you will find the oldest functioning planetarium in the world. Continuing your journey, you will arrive in the village of Hogebeintum, where you’ll stand atop the highest terp in the Netherlands, nearly nine metres above sea level. Your final destination for the day is the fortified town of Dokkum, where time seems to have stood still. The town’s distinctive stepped gables and canals create a unique atmosphere, making this historic pilgrimage site captivating not only for pilgrims but for all who visit.

Day 9

Dokkum – Leeuwarden

approx. 30 / 45 km

Today, you will cycle through typical Frisian landscapes as you make your way back to Leeuwarden. With only a few kilometres to cover, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city upon arrival. A visit to the Fries Museum, the largest provincial museum in the Netherlands, is a must. It houses thousands of artefacts spanning art, culture, and history. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely stroll along Kleine Kerkstraat, one of the most charming shopping streets in the Netherlands, where you can soak in the atmosphere and perhaps do a little shopping.
