Cycling holidays along the Danube: What to expect

The Danube is no ordinary river – and a cycling tour along its banks is no ordinary holiday. Even the Upper Danube between Donaueschingen and Ulm is full of surprises: here, a young, wild river winds its way through deep limestone gorges, past Beuron Abbey and the Hohenzollern Castle in Sigmaringen. Anyone familiar with the Danube’s disappearance into the ground near Immendingen will realise that this river is full of surprises right from the start.

Along the Bavarian stretch of the Danube, the valley opens out. Donauwörth, Ingolstadt, Regensburg – the towns become more magnificent, the cycle paths wider, the views more expansive. The Danube Gorge near Kelheim, with Weltenburg Abbey, is one of the scenic highlights of the whole of Germany. In Passau, the city of three rivers, the Inn, the Ilz and the Danube converge – and the Danube Cycle Route becomes a European classic.

The route from Passau to Vienna is the most popular stage along the Danube – and for good reason. The Schlögener Schlinge, Melk Abbey high above the river, the vineyards of the Wachau and, finally, imperial Vienna: this section combines natural beauty and cultural history within a very small area. No wonder the Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Those who wish to cycle even further will find no fewer than three capital cities – Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest – all on a single stage between Vienna and Budapest. Slovakia, Hungary, the ‘Knee of the Danube’ near Vác: the Danube widens, the light turns golden, and the cuisine becomes heartier.
