Spring is cycling season – and it starts earlier than most people think

Whilst winter still reigns at home, early-season cyclists in Mallorca are pedalling through blossoming almond groves, along the Algarve’s rugged coastline or over the rolling hills of Madeira – in temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees and on almost deserted paths. And those who wait until March or April can experience the landscape literally coming to life around Lake Constance, the Moselle or the Danube: delicate shades of green, crisp air, and the first hours of sunshine of the year.

What all our spring cycling tours have in common is this: we take care of everything. Hotel bookings, luggage transport, route maps – all sorted. You set off in the morning, enjoy the day, and arrive back in the evening feeling relaxed. No planning stress whatsoever, just the full spring experience.

Spring in Germany – Lake Constance, the Moselle and the Rhine

In southern Germany, the cycling season really gets underway as early as the end of March. Around Lake Constance, the Moselle and the Rhine, the days are mild, the countryside is coming into bloom – and you’ll have the cycle paths almost to yourselves.

On the Lake Constance Cycle Route, you can cycle with the Alpine panorama behind you and without the crowds at the lakeside cafés. Along the Moselle, the first vine blossoms transform the river valleys into a lush green – on the wine tour, you can sample local wines straight from the producers and enjoy the spring sunshine on old vineyard terraces.

Sunshine as early as February: a cycling holiday in southern Europe

If you don’t want to wait until April, southern Europe already offers that genuine holiday feeling. Mallorca is in full bloom as early as February, Madeira is green and mild all year round, and in the Algarve you can cycle between sheer cliffs and sandy beaches in glorious sunshine. Southern Italy welcomes you with olive groves and a relaxed tranquillity that is no longer to be found in summer. The Costa Blanca beckons with its orange groves and medieval towns – available to book all year round.

And for those looking for something truly special: cycle and boat tours in Croatia in March offer the Dalmatian islands almost entirely to yourselves – the sea glistens, the harbours are quiet, and yet that summer feeling is already in the air.

Who are spring cycling holidays particularly suitable for?

Spring cycling holidays aren’t a compromise – for many, they’re a conscious first choice.

Whether you prefer to cycle at your own pace rather than in a group, carry a camera and wait for the perfect light, want to try a guided cycle tour for the first time, or simply want to go on holiday earlier than everyone else: spring is exactly the right time of year. The stages are manageable, the routes are quiet, and the booking situation often allows for more flexibility with dates and hotels. We take care of everything – you just set off.

In Germany, by the end of March and early April, pleasant cycling trips are already possible in sheltered areas such as the Moselle Valley or around Lake Constance – with temperatures between 12 and 16 degrees. If you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine, southern Europe is definitely the place to be in March.

Well into May, even popular routes such as the Lake Constance Cycle Route and the Moselle Cycle Route are noticeably quieter than during the peak season. Spring is the ideal time for anyone who wants to explore the sights without having to queue.

Experience has shown that popular spring holidays – particularly the tulip bloom in Holland or Mallorca in March – tend to sell out quickly. We recommend booking by January or February at the latest to ensure you have the best choice of dates and hotels.
