A cycle tour in Alsace is ideal to explore the traces of the Celts, Romans, Alemanni and Franks in Alsace. Beautiful and well-preserved half-timbered towns in the Rhine valley, romantic wine villages at the edge of the Vosges, dense forests and a cuisine which is also famous in France await you. Apart from Strasbourg, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, other highlights are Colmar, Riquewihr and Obernai on your cycle tour in Alsace.

Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Strasbourg

Discover this town with its rich German-French history. From the historic quarter, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the avant-garde European institution buildings - there's a lot to explore. The Münsterplatz square with its picturesque half-timbered houses and famous cathedral is considered one of Europe's most beautiful. Booked rental bikes are available at the hotel.

Day 2

Strasbourg – Osthouse / Saint-Hippolyte / Sélestat

approx. 25 – 60 km

The first stage of the cycle tour in Alsace takes you into the heart of the region. From Strasbourg, you cycle southwards along the Canal du Rhône au Rhin and the River Ill. You cycle through small villages with almost no inclines and enjoy the passing landscape. One of today's highlights is Sélestat. Colourful half-timbered houses and church towers characterise the image of the town. Sélestat is famous for its unique Bibliothèque humaniste, which not only has the oldest surviving book in Alsace, but also boasts numerous works from the Renaissance and Humanism.

Day 3

Sélestat – Colmar

approx. 25 – 55 km

Passing vineyards and green slopes, your route takes you to Colmar. Its listed historic quarter, featuring impressive Gothic churches, awaits your arrival. Old timber-framed houses, that have started to slant over the years, almost lean against each other. Colmar is considered the capital for Alsace wines and is the best place to become acquainted with Alsace cuisine.

Day 4

Colmar – Guebwiller / Westhalten

approx. 35 / 45 km

The imposing church Notre-Dame de Guebwiller is the biggest classicist church in Alsace. You will be amazed by the richly decorated pulpit and altarpiece. The large museum dedicated to the works of Theodore Deck gives you insight into Fayencen art.  Aside from culture, wine is important to Guebwiller. Since 2007, the Alsace winegrowers have distinguished special vine locations. Guebwiller is proud to be the only town with four Grand-Cru parcels.

Day 5

Guebwiller – Riquewihr region

approx. 40 – 50 km

Your cycle tour in Alsace takes you into the vineyards today. Short climbs are rewarded with long descents. Mostly on dedicated cycle paths, you cycle directly past the vines. The landscape is interrupted by small, picturesque wine villages. In Riquewihr you reach one of the prettiest villages in France. The Dolder Tower is particularly worth seeing. Decorated with half-timbering, it used to be an important part of the town fortifications.

Day 6

Riquewihr – Andlau / Obernai

approx. 35 - 50 km

The easiest way to get an overview of Obernai is by doing a tour on the town wall. In the small town on the Ehn, you can enjoy some more Alsace specialities such as tarte flambée or sauerkraut on your last evening meal. Remember that just because you're in Alsace you don't have to drink wine all the time - the famous Kronenbourg brewery is based in Obernai.

Day 7

Obernai – Strasbourg

approx. 55 / 40 km and individual departure without overnight stay

On your last cycling stage, you will pass the Canal de la Bruche. It once transported countless barrels of wine towards the capital. You head towards Strasbourg and can soon see the 160 m cathedral tower. Your cycle tour in Alsace ends here in the afternoon. If you have a longer journey home or would like to spend a little more time in Alsace, we would be happy to extend your stay in Strasbourg.
