Map - The great Moselle cycling holiday
Itinerary
Individual arrival to Perl
Your Great Moselle cycling holiday begins in the border triangle of Germany, France, and Luxembourg. After checking in at your hotel, take some time to explore Perl. Head out on your bike and discover the Roman Villa Borg, which offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman life and times. Further traces of the Romans can be found in the district of Nennig, where you’ll encounter the remains of another Roman villa, complete with impressive floor mosaics. In Saarland's only wine-growing village, you’ll find a wealth of charming wine taverns, perfect for a leisurely stop to savour a glass of Elbling or Pinot Gris, regional wines that epitomise the area’s rich viticultural heritage.
Perl – Treves
On the first stage of your Moselle cycling holiday, you’ll follow the winding course of the river, which forms the border with Luxembourg, all the way to Wasserbillig. From there, continue through Konz to Treves, Germany's oldest city. Treves is home to the iconic Porta Nigra, the Black Gate, which serves as the perfect starting point for exploring this historic city. Take time to visit some of Treves' key sights, including the Imperial Baths, Treves Cathedral, the amphitheatre, and the Roman Bridge. For wine enthusiasts, a walk along the Wine Culture Trail is highly recommended—it offers an insightful journey through the history and cultivation of wine, with informative stops at every turn.
Excursion to Saarburg
Today, you’ll cycle along the Upper Moselle and the Saar River, heading towards Saarburg, a city with over 1,000 years of history. One of its key landmarks is the castle ruins perched above the town—one of the oldest hilltop castles in western Germany. From the castle’s viewing platforms, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the picturesque Saar Valley. In the heart of Saarburg, you’ll find a 20-metre-high waterfall, whose rumbling sound can be heard from afar. This waterfall, created in the Middle Ages, was once harnessed to power mill wheels. After exploring Saarburg, you’ll cycle back to Treves via Tawern and Konz, completing a scenic day of cycling.
Excursion to Bitburg
Today, you’ll take a train to Bitburg, located in the scenic southern Eifel region. The city today is most widely known for its brewery. It was founded by the Romans as a roadside fort you will still find the remnants of the old town wall. From Bitburg, you’ll cycle back to Treves following the picturesque Kyll Valley. The Kyll Cycle Path takes you through lush orchards and serene floodplain landscapes, offering a relaxed ride through nature. Your route will lead you to the Moselle River at Ehrang, with just a few more kilometres to reach your destination – Treves.
Treves – Bernkastel-Kues

Continuing on, you'll reach Zell, where the Moselle forms its narrowest loop. With over four million vines, Zell is one of the largest wine-growing towns in Germany. The Schwarze Katz vineyard is particularly renowned – make sure to sample a refreshing, tangy Riesling. Your journey then takes you to the wine village of Bullay, where you'll conclude your day's ride and enjoy an overnight stay.
Excursion to Kelberg
In the morning, the RadBus (a special bus for cyclists) will take you to Kelberg, located in the heart of the Volcanic Eifel. On your return journey, you’ll pass the Mosbrucher Weiher, an almost circular dry moor that features a unique fen—a habitat for rare plants and wildlife. Footbridges allow you to explore this tranquil area up close. While the route includes a few climbs, the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
