Itinerary
Individual arrival in Prien am Chiemsee
Once you arrive at the hotel, you’ll be given a briefing about your cycling holiday. If you’ve booked hire bikes, they’ll be waiting for you at the hotel. Grab your bike and explore Prien, the largest town on Lake Chiemsee. This historic market town delights visitors with its beautiful lakeside promenade and restaurants.
Excursion to the Eggstätter Lake District
The first cycling tour of your holiday at Lake Chiemsee takes you through the oldest nature reserve in Bavaria. The Eggstätter Seenplatte, comprising 17 lakes, offers a scenic and leisurely ride, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region. As you cycle, you will pass charming farms before reaching the peaceful village of Höslwang, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Alpine panorama. For automobile enthusiasts, a visit to the Museum of German Automobile History in Amerang is a must. A detour to Amerang will add approximately 20 km to your route.
Excursion around the Chiemsee
Today's route of your cycling holiday takes you around the stunning Bavarian Sea, beginning your journey from Pelham towards Lake Chiemsee. As you cycle through tranquil forests and charming, picturesque villages, you will be treated to direct views of the shimmering lake, framed by the beautiful Upper Bavarian landscape. Along the cycle path, you'll encounter various vantage points offering unforgettable views of the Chiemsee islands and the majestic Alpine panorama—each spot well worth a stop. For those eager to enjoy a refreshing swim, numerous outdoor pools are located along the route, providing perfect opportunities to take a dip. Culture enthusiasts will not want to miss a visit to the Roman Museum in Seebruck, where the rich Celtic-Roman heritage of the Chiemgau region comes to life.
Excursion to the islands Herreninsel and Fraueninsel
A short cycle ride takes you to the boat landing stage in Prien, where a boat will then transport you to Herreninsel, the largest island on Lake Chiemsee. Here, you'll find the fairy-tale castle built by King Ludwig II, a replica of the Palace of Versailles. The castle is adorned with around five kilograms of gold leaf, and its bedroom stands as one of the most opulent rooms of the 19th century. After exploring Herreninsel, a visit to the nearby Fraueninsel is a must. The island, with its quaint fishing village and ancient monastery, offers a serene and timeless atmosphere. Step back in time and enjoy the tranquillity of this peaceful retreat. Be sure to savour the hearty regional cuisine!
Excursion to the Achental
From Prien, your cycling holiday on Lake Chiemsee begins with a journey by bus or train – at your own convenience – to the village of Übersee. This is where the cycle tour starts, taking you first through the idyllic climatic health resort of Grassau and then along the Achental Cycle Route via Unterwössen to Schleching. The Tiroler Ache river accompanies you along the way. The route takes you back to Grassau via Marquartstein on well-maintained cycle paths. You then continue through the Rottauer Filze moorland area to Bernau. Finally, you’ll enjoy the last few kilometres along Lake Chiemsee before returning to your starting point in Prien.
Excursion to Seeon Monastery
Cycle through lush countryside and enchanting forests to Seeon, where the monastery of the same name awaits you. Situated on an island, this former imperial monastery, dating back to 994, is nestled within a serene nature reserve. A stroll across the bridge connecting the island to the mainland offers a step back in time, allowing you to fully appreciate the historic setting. Take a moment to relax and savour the peaceful landscape with a glass of local wine. On your return journey, the deep blue waters of Lake Chiemsee will soon come into view, and you may even spot the small wine-growing areas dotting the slopes. Cycle back to your hotel, passing through traditional Bavarian villages along the way.
