Pickle Cycle Path in Spreewald

Round Trip from Cottbus in 7 days/6 nights from 389,- €
Pickle Cycle Path in Spreewald

The Spreewald is a unique natural and cultural landscape, which is protected as biosphere reserve. The river Spree forms a branched out river system, which was enlarged with several canals by the Sorbish population. River meadows and moors with the typical flora and fauna characterize the region, which is also used agriculturally for special crops. The most famous are probably the Spreewald Pickles (Spreewald Gurken), which gave this round trip their name. The pickle cycle path is very well suited for families with children.

This tour is available in the following varieties:

Category B: Overnight stay in family run guesthouses and hotels of the national 2*/3* category.
Category A: Overnight stays in specially selected hotels of the national 3*/4*category.

Day 1 Individual arrival in Cottbus

Cottbus is the cultural centre of the Sorbian minority in Lower Lusatia. The market square, with its Baroque town houses, the Branitzer Park of Prince Pückler - an enchanting piece of landscape gardening and the oldest German cinema, built in the Art Nouveau style, are worth seeing. The town was shaped by the immigrated French Huguenots.

Day 2 Cottbus - Burg, approx. 50 km

What a beautiful start to your day - you will explore the green Spreewald forest by bike. Today you can also get an insight into the world of open-cast mining. From several vantage points you will have an opportunity to look inside active open-cast mining sites. The Peitz pond landscape is Germany's largest connected pond area. Carps have been bred here for a long time- they are mainly sold to Berlin.

Day 3 Burg - Lübben, approx. 45 km

Straupnitz has two very special attractions to offer: the white Schinkel church presents an unusual sight with its two flat towers. The mill wheels of the Dreifach mill (combining three mills) turn slowly in the wind and you will have the opportunity to sample the linseed oil, which is extracted at Europe's last functioning mill.
From here you will cycle to Lübben, the main town of the Spreewald, where one can see artificially created islands and streams.

Day 4 Lübben - Burg, approx. 45 km

The magic spell nature casts upon a landscape is sometimes incredible. The Spreewald near Lübbenau is mainly preserved in its wild originality. 300 natural streams run through  green meadows and fields, like blue and white glittering threads. On your tour you will cycle past many well-preserved farm yards. In Lehnde you can visit the open-air museum, which gives visitors an insight into the everyday life of the 19th century. The Pickle Museum is also highly interesting.

Burg is a typical scattered settlement, which is located in the heart of the Spreewald. Today you will have the opportunity to explore the individual farmsteads in the districts Burg-Dorf, Burg-Kolonie and Burg-Kauper by bike. A two-hour boat trip is a special highlight today - you can lean back, relax and watch the landscape roll past. Utterly relaxed, the trip back to Cottbus will be even more fun. Stroll through the town with its many beautiful Art Nouveau buildings.

Day 6 Excursion Spremberger See/Branitzer Park, approx. 60 km

The Spree cycle path is easy to cycle and takes you through a romantic landscape. Soon you will reach the large Spremberg reservoir. A little bit further to the east you will reach the Bagenzer pond. Take a relaxing break or dive into the refreshing water at the beautiful beach. On the way back be sure to visit the Branitzer park with its grass-covered pyramids.
