The Lake Constance cycle path is one of Europe’s most popular cycle routes. On this varied tour you will cycle around the entire lake through three countries! The highlights are the medieval towns of Constance, Stein am Rhein, Meersburg and Schaffhausen. Not to forget the Rhine Falls, which you get to see up close on a boat trip to the Rhine Falls rock. The daily sections of the route through charming countryside are not too long, making this tour perfect also for people who are not so used to cycling. And there is so much to see and explore on the way that the time in the saddle will simply fly by.

Lake Constance Cycle Path

Day 1: Individual arrival in Constance

You start your tour in Constance, Lake Constance’s biggest town. 600 years ago this was where the Council of Constance took place, the only council to elect a pope that was held north of the Alps. The Rhine leaves Lake Constance here at 0 kilometres on its way to the North Sea. Only a few minutes by foot from the medieval town centre is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbour.

Day 2: Constance – Island of Reichenau – Schaffhausen, approx. 45 km + boat trip

The first stage of your Lake Constance cycle tour takes you to the vegetable island of Reichenau, whose monastery had far-reaching influence in the 10th century and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Take the boat to Gaienhofen and cycle along the Höri peninsula, where Hermann Hesse lived, to the Swiss town of Stein am Rhein with its beautiful old town. Here you leave Lake Constance for the time being and follow the Rhine for about 20 km to Schaffhausen. Be sure to visit the Rhine Falls here in the afternoon, they are gigantic. In summer, about 600,000 litres of water per second tumble over the rocks at Europe's largest waterfall.

Day 3: Schaffhausen – Stein – Ludwigshafen / Überlingen, approx. 35 – 50 km + boat trip

Today begins in a relaxed way with a boat trip on the beautiful High Rhine. Enjoy the landscape from a different perspective. The route continues over the Höri peninsula to the spa town of Radolfzell. On the way over the Bodanrück, countless meadow orchards accompany you on your way to today's stage destination Ludwigshafen or Überlingen with its numerous parks, gardens and green spaces.

Day 4: Überlingen – Friedrichshafen, approx. 35 km

Your Lake Constance cycle tour today takes you past the pilgrimage church of Birnau and the Lake Dwelling Museum. Meersburg, the medieval town, is fantastically situated on a steep vineyard slope. You should not miss a tour of the castle! Then cycle along more vineyards towards Friedrichshafen.

Day 5: Friedrichshafen – Lindau / Bregenz, approx. 30 / 40 km

Today the tour first takes you through Langenargen. Here you’ll find the charming Castle Montfort, built in a Moorish style. Next, you will be cycling through orchards until you reach the Bavarian town of Lindau, whose harbour is watched over by a lion. After only a few kilometres you arrive in Austria and cycle right along the banks of the lake to the festival town of Bregenz.

Day 6: Lindau – Rorschach / Arbon, approx. 35 / 45 km

Wander through the town of Bregenz and enjoy its beautifully preserved upper town. Once you arrive in Hard, you cross the Rhine, which flows in from the Swiss Alps. Now you are on Swiss ground, in Altenrhein, and you will see the Hundertwasser Halle, the last colorful building made by the famous artist. You cycle along the banks of the lake to the old harbour town of Rorschach.

Day 7: Rorschach - Constance, approx. 30 - 50 km

The last day on your tour on the Lake Constance Cycle Path is devoted to the Canton of Thurgau, which is endearingly known as Cider India because of its huge apple orchards and slightly remote location, at least from the Swiss perspective. The route takes you along the banks of the lake. If you like you can stay an extra night in Rorschach and combine this with a trip to the Appenzeller Land.
