Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Münster

Welcome to your cycling tour around Münster! Be sure not to arrive too late, as the former Westphalian capital has much to offer. It is known as most bicycle-friendly city in Germany and was selected as city most worth living in its category. The Prinzipalmarkt (main marketplace), with its magnificent merchant buildings which have decorated stepped gables, is the centre of the city. You shouldn't miss visiting the dome and the castle and go for a walk along the Aasee.

Day 2

Münster – Schöppingen

approx. 55 km

Cycle out of Muenster leisurely on quiet paths to reach Havixbeck. You should take a break here: Castle Hülsdorff informs visitors about the castle and the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. The sandstone museum explains the extraction and processing of the Baumberger Sandstein, which was used for many buildings and works of art. Passing St. Ludger Church in Billerbeck and the moated castle in Darfeld, you will reach Schöppingen.

Day 3

Schöppingen – Vreden

approx. 60 km

This stage first leads through a charming park and heath landscape to Ahaus. The impressive moated castle once served as the residence of the prince bishops of Münster and today houses a museum. The tour continues in the direction of the Dutch border. In Vreden you have reached your destination for the day. A little further west, the nature reserve Zwillbrocker Venn begins. In the forest, moor and wet meadow area you'll find a bird sanctuary, where even flamingos can be observed.

Day 4

Vreden – Bocholt

approx. 50 km

Today you will be heading to the Netherlands for a stage section. Through narrow avenues, on beautiful bike paths and small farm roads you cycle to Winterswijk, which is known for its cozy market. Afterwards you cycle to Bredevoort. If you like books, this is the right place for you. The book town has a large number of antiquarian bookshops and thus offers many opportunities to browse. Across the Dutch-German border you will reach Bocholt. Just like Münster, the city is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in Germany.

Day 5

Bocholt – Coesfeld

approx. 65 km

Along the small river Aa, you will first cycle to Borken on this stage of your cycling tour around Münster. In the district of Gemen, you will find a castle that has developed into a magnificent palace over the course of its more than 900-year history. The exterior of the complex is freely accessible and thus offers the most diverse perspectives on the magnificent moated castle. With Coesfeld, you will reach your destination for the day.

Day 6

Coesfeld – Lüdinghausen

approx. 55 km

Let the sound of the church bells of the Lamberti Church wake you up before you set off over the rolling hills of the Baumberge, the highest mountain range in Münsterland. In Nottuln, take a break in the baroque town center and one of the most beautiful squares in Münsterland. Passing the moated castle in Senden, you will reach Lüdinghausen. The town has three castles, with the moated castle and Vischering Castle standing out. In the museum of Vischering Castle you will learn more about its history and gain insights into the castles and palaces of the Münsterland.

Day 7

Lüdinghausen – Münster

approx. 55 km

On the last stage of your cycling tour around Münster, you will get to know probably the most impressive castle of the entire trip. Nordkirchen Castle is often referred to as the Westphalian Versailles due to its architectural design. Take a walk through the spacious landscape park before cycling back to Münster.
