Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Constance

Your bike tour begins in Constance, the largest city of Lake Constance. 600 years ago, the city was the scene of the church council and the only papal election north of the Alps. Here the Rhine flows into Lake Constance: you are at kilometer zero of the river's way to the North Sea. A few minutes' walk from the medieval city center is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbor.

Day 2

Constance – Schaffhausen

approx. 50 km

Your cycle tour takes you along the Lake Constance bike path past Constance through picturesque Swiss fishing villages. The route follows the shores of the lower lake to Stein am Rhein. The city is famous for its frescoed, medieval houses. Now you've left Lake Constance . Continue on on the Rhine bike path alternating several times between Germany and Switzerland until you reach the cantonal capital of Schaffhausen. The city is overshadowed by the Munot fortress whose citizens competed building oriel windows.

Day 3

Schaffhausen – Waldshut-Tiengen

approx. 55 / 60 km

Shortly you will reach the Rhine Falls which is arguably the largest waterfall in Europe. A boat gets you even closer to the thundering masses of water. You continue along the Rhine's shore, pass Rheinau Abbey and cycle through the beautiful Rhine landscape. There are a several climbs along the way which are always rewarded with magnificent views.

Day 4

Waldshut-Tiengen – Basel

approx. 55 km + train ride or approx. 65 km

You cycle past Laufenburg to Bad Säckingen, home to the longest covered wooden bridge in Europe. Two exceptional museums await your visit: the garbage museum and the trumpet museum. The later one illustrates the romantic story of the trumpeter of Bad Säckingen. Cycle along the north bank of the Rhine to Rheinfelden. Here, you can easily shorten the stage by train (not included) if you would like to have additional time for Basel. If you continue by bike, you will pass the August Roman Museum. It showcases the history of the Roman colony of Augusta Raurica. Around 200 AD, around 10,000 people lived here – the ruins are still visible to this day. Once you conclude the day in the three-country town of Basel, you will have completed the longest stage on the Southern Black Forest Bike Route!

Day 5

Basel – Badenweiler / Müllheim

approx. 50 / 45 km

You leave lively Basel behind at the border triangle and cycle onwards to the Isteiner Klotz. The Tullaschen Rhine correction used to be surrounded by the floods of the Rhine nowadays it lies quietly away from the riverbed. You will soon reach the first bathing resorts. Here on the edge of the Black Forest, healing waters emerge from the mountains and have been used for thermal baths since Roman times.

Day 6

Badenweiler / Müllheim – Freiburg

approx. 45 / 40 km

The Margraviate region has a lovely atmosphere. The countless hours of sunshine and its remarkably pure water enable the growth of wineyards. Baden serenity prevails in the villages and towns on the edge of the Black Forest. You reach Freiburg, the southernmost city in Germany. The tower of Freiburg Minster was described by Jacob Burkhardt in 1869 as the most beautiful tower in the world.

Day 7
