Cycling Holiday in East Frisia

Borkum, Norderney and East-Frisia

7 Days / 6 Nights
Easy

East Frisia and its islands are calling! Greet the sheep on the dykes as you pedal past on your bike. When the tide goes out, try a walk through the mud-flats or have a refreshing dip when the tide comes in. An introduction to the traditional niceties of an East Frisian Tea Ceremony is a must, and then you can have a go at shelling prawns and simply enjoy the view from a lighthouse. On your cycling holiday in East Frisia you will be cycling along the North Sea coast and will be able to take trips to the islands of Borkum and Nordeney. You will learn what makes North Germany so special: its countryside and people, who have found a way to live comfortably with each other – not without developing a number of very endearing characteristics.

Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Emden

Emden, the largest city in East Frisia, was a pirate's nest of ill repute in the Middle Ages, which was eventually smoked out by the Hamburgers. The industrialization of the Ruhr area, for which Emden was and is an important port, led to its economic prosperity. Today it is the shopping center of the region and has first-class culture to offer with the Kunsthalle (art gallery) donated by Henri Nannen.

Day 2

Excursion to Borkum Island

A ship will take you to the largest of the East Frisian islands in two hours. If the inhabitants lived in the beginning still from the flotsam and jetsam with occasional piracy, the whaling provided from the 17th century for a certain prosperity. Almost 30 km of the best sandy beach offer bathing fun for young and old. Cyclists have 130 km of bike paths for exploration, which can be combined with a ride on the narrow-gauge Railroad.

Day 3

Emden – Norden

approx. 55 km

Today's cycling stage leads through the municipality of Krummhörn. Along the way you will encounter the typical warf villages, windmills and, of course, the lighthouses. Greetsiel is still an important shrimp cutter harbor today. Don't miss the chance to taste the fresh seafood while listening to the birds and the sea! You cycle further along the Leybucht and reach the Wadden Sea.

Day 4

Trip to the island of Norderney

The ferry takes you to the island of Norderney, one of the younger East Frisian islands, whose gray dunes are covered by sea buckthorn. By bike, you'll pass long dunes in front of white sandy beaches, and you can get off at any time to cool off in the sea. Or you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Wadden Sea National Park, where you can observe birds and seal families in their natural environment.

Day 5

Norden – Jever / Umgebung

approx. 65 km

Today on your cycling holiday in East Frisia you cycle back on the mainland and can visit perhaps the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia in Dornum. Through the expansive marshlands, you'll head to the former chieftain town of Esens and on through tranquil Wittmund with its unique brick buildings. You can sleep well in Jever after tasting the famous beer.

Day 6

Jever – Emden

approx. 60 km

In Aurich, which also likes to call itself the secret capital of East Frisia, it is worth taking a break. Significant monuments are the castle, the modern sous tower, the Pingelhus and the Galerieholländer. For water sports enthusiasts and cyclists, the Ems-Jade Canal, which connects Wilhelmshaven with Emden and along whose banks you can cycle comfortably and almost car-free from Aurich to Emden, is pleasing.

Day 7

Individual departure or extension

After breakfast your cycling holiday in East Frisia ends. We are happy to extend your vacation in Emden.

Jever Castle with yellow facade and ornate white tower topped by dark dome, surrounded by green lawn and mature trees under blue sky.

Jever Castle

Three bronze statues of dock workers at Emden harbor with the historic town hall and colorful buildings reflected in the water behind them.

Delftspucker and Emden Town Hall

White music pavilion with dome on Borkum beach promenade. Colorful beach chairs dot the sandy beach, with rows of orange chairs and people nearby.

Bandstand on the island of Borkum

Golden sunset over the Wadden Sea with the sun reflecting on wet mudflats. The horizon shows the North Sea under an orange and yellow sky.
