Bike tour through Schleswig

Pure nature between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea

8 Days / 7 Nights
Easy
Red and white striped Westerhever lighthouse with adjacent buildings on Westerheversand, surrounded by green salt marshes under dramatic cloudy sky.

Sun, wind, dykes and the flat marshland landscape - all of this evokes vacation feelings. However, you will experience much more on your cycle tour through Schleswig. The Wadden Sea and St. Peter-Ording with its long sandy beach await you on the North Sea coast. The multifaceted Baltic Sea coast attracts visitors with its steep coasts, wind and water mills and lively towns. In between are wide, flat cycle paths, small villages and venerable manor houses. Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings and seafarers. Haithabu, the trading center from the Viking Age and the large ships on the Kiel Canal are impressive sights. The overnight stops on your cycle tour through Schleswig are mostly small, cozy towns, each with its own charm. Stroll through the picturesque alleyways, marvel at the typical thatched-roof houses and visit typical local restaurants. You must try regional delicacies such as sour roll or Labskaus. Add a Pharisäer or Küstennebel and you are ready for the next stage of your cycle tour through Schleswig.

Itinerary

Day 1

Individual journey to Husum

The picturesque town of Husum is the ideal starting point for your bike tour through Schleswig. One of the sights here is the changing tides, which you can experience up close in the middle of the town. Stroll through the narrow streets and alleyways lined with pretty gabled houses. There are numerous restaurants and cafés around the harbor. Get in the mood for your cycle tour through Schleswig in a maritime ambience.

Day 2

Husum – Schleswig

approx. 45 km

You leave the North Sea and cycle along the Eider-Treene-Sorge path to Hollingstedt. Here you will find the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe from the Viking era. The trading center of Haithabu and the ramparts of the Danewerk. You will soon have reached your destination for the day - the charming little town of Schleswig. Situated directly on the banks of the Schlei, you can refresh yourself with a dip in the cool water or go on a discovery tour. Gottorf Castle, the baroque garden and the giant globe are certainly worth a visit.

Day 3

Schleswig – Kappeln

approx. 50 km

The long arm of the Baltic Sea, as the Schlei is known, accompanies you on today's stage of your cycle tour through Schleswig. There are numerous pretty towns between Schleswig and the transition to the open sea. Take a break in Arnis, the smallest town in Germany, and enjoy the maritime flair. Another short stretch in the saddle and you will reach Kappeln. Discover the largest Dutch mill in the state, the herring fence and the museum harbor.

Day 4

Kappeln – Eckernförde

approx. 45 km

You cycle across the Schwansen peninsula to the Baltic seaside resort of Damp. If you've never looked out to sea from a beach chair, you can do so on Damp's four-kilometre-long sandy beach. Continue through unspoiled nature, past old avenues, over gentle hills and green forests to Eckernförde. Spend the evening at the idyllic harbor with its beautiful promenade. Be sure to try the freshly caught fish in one of the cozy restaurants.

Day 5

Eckernförde – Rendsburg

approx. 30 / 60 km

On today's stage of your bike tour through Schleswig, you have to decide. Are your legs still fit enough? Then cycle along the coast towards Kiel. Shortly before the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, the Kiel Canal flows into the sea. It is one of the busiest waterways in the world. Numerous bridges, locks and ships are passed. Alternatively, you can take the shortcut through the inland, crossing forests, fields and moors.

Day 6

Rendsburg – Friedrichstadt / Lunden

approx. 50 / 60 km

Before you cycle on, stay a little longer in Rendsburg. Stroll through the old town with its narrow streets, medieval squares and the old town hall. Back in the saddle again, you cycle through breathtaking nature. Enjoy the peace and quiet in the forests and along the rivers. Again and again you will pass through small villages with thatched roofs where time seems to stand still. Located between the rivers Eider and Treene is Friedrichstadt, your destination for today's stage.

Day 7

Friedrichstadt – St. Peter-Ording – Husum

approx. 55 / 45 km + train ride

Stroll through Friedrichstadt, also known as the Dutch town due to its numerous canals. On the way to Tönning, you will pass the famous Hoyerswort manor house. You will soon reach St. Peter-Ording. You are sure to be impressed by the 12-kilometre-long flat sandy beach. From the dunes, you have an unmistakable view over the houses on stilts, the whizzing beach sailors and the vast sea.

Day 8

Individual departure

After breakfast, your varied bike tour through Schleswig comes to an end. If you would like to enjoy your vacation on the North Sea even longer, we will be happy to book you an extra night.
