Bike Tour along the North Sea Coast

Out and about around Husum

6 Days / 5 Nights
Medium
Historic harbor of Husum with colorful buildings along the waterfront. Red and blue boats moored at the quay under a bright blue sky.

The writer Theodor Storm once described Husum as a grey town by the sea. Not a trace of that can be seen now: Husum is colourful and lively! Get in the mood for our bike tour North Sea as you go for a stroll through the harbour, where you canwatch the tide go out. Husum is the ideal place to go on exciting day trips from. You visit St. Peter-Ording. The seemingly endless sandy beach and the pile dwellings are also among the highlights on our bike tour North Sea, as is the red-and-white striped Westerhever lighthouse. On Hallig Hooge you will experience the unique atmosphere of life on a dwelling mound and the danger of flooding from the North Sea. Friedrichstadt will make you feel like you are in Holland. Thanks to Dutch immigrants, the town gained its present appearance in the 17th century - canals included. The idyllic harbour town of Tönning impresses with its picturesque harbour and the Multimar Wattforum, which offers you insights into life on and in the Wadden Sea. Last but not least, you will be visiting Sylt. Beautiful beaches and dune landscapes are as much a part of Germany‘s largest North Sea island as the thatched Frisian houses and a colourful cultural scene. Well-maintained cycle paths, sheep grazing on dikes, the fresh North Sea air, and the laid-back North Frisians as well as the hearty North German cuisine round out our bike tour North Sea perfectly.

Itinerary

Day 1

Individual journey to Husum

There is hardly a better place to set off on a bike tour North Sea than Husum. The interplay of the tides in Husum's inland port alone is worth seeing. Over the centuries, the town has also grown into a small metropolis on the North Sea and leaves nothing to be desired. Whether culinary or cultural - in Husum you have the best starting point to get to know North Friesland better.

Day 2

Excursion to St. Peter-Ording

approx. 60 km + train ride

The first day of your bike tour North Sea begins with a train ride to St. Peter-Ording. The 12-kilometre-long sandy beach is ideal for sunbathing and watching the kitesurfers being pulled over the waves by the stiff breeze. The beach has been home to distinctive pile dwellings for over 100 years, which have provided food and drink for beachgoers for centuries. Cycle along the coast to Westerhever. The famous red and white striped lighthouse awaits you there. The landmark of the Eiderstedt peninsula can be seen from afar.

Day 3

Excursion to Hallig Hooge

approx. 25 km + ferry rides and transfer

Explore the Nordstrand peninsula at a leisurely pace before taking the ferry to Hallig Hooge at lunchtime. Hallig islands are small marsh islands in the Wadden Sea, where flooding means landfall several times a year. Thanks to the mounds - artificial mounds - the islands can be inhabited all year round. Hooge is the second largest Hallig in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea. Visit the Storm Surge Cinema, which brings a landfall to the big screen. Also worth seeing: the Königspesel, an originally preserved captain's house. Return to Nordstrand in the evening. A transfer will take you back to Husum

Day 4

Excursion to Friedrichstadt and Tönning

approx. 40 km + train ride

Your bike tour North Sea first takes you through Südermarsch to Friedrichstadt. Leave your bike behind and stroll along the numerous canals of the Dutch town. On your way to Tönning, you will pass typical North German villages and the Herrenhaus Hoyerswort, Schleswig-Holstein's only noble estate on the west coast. An idyllic harbor town awaits you in Tönning. The Multimar Wattforum takes you into the world of the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. Treat yourself to a hearty fish sandwich at the harbor before taking the train back to Husum.

Day 5

Excursion to the island of Sylt

Today we travel by train from Husum via Niebüll to the island of Sylt. The largest North Frisian island is extremely scenic and impresses with its miles of sandy beaches, cliffs, dune areas and thatched houses. The island boasts over 200 kilometers of cycle paths. Ideal for a short or extended cycle tour. Cycle along the former Sylt island railroad line, to the Hörnum lighthouse, to the Red Cliff near Kampen or to List for a fish sandwich - you can organize today's cycling day however you like. In the evening, take the train back to Husum.

Day 6

Individual departure

Your bike tour North Sea ends after breakfast. If you wish, you can extend your stay in Husum with an extra night.
