Lake Constance and Allgäu Bike Tour

Lake Constance, Rhine Falls, Danube & Allgäu

9 Days / 8 Nights
Medium
Red house on a hill surrounded by green vineyards near Immenstaad. Lake Bodensee and snow-capped Alps visible in the background.

Golden-tipped onion domes, Baroque inn signs over low doors and gentle green hills - that‘s what you can expect in Upper Swabia. Starting at Lake Constance you will not only explore the Swabian Lake Constance hinterland, but also visit the rushing Rhine Falls and the volcanic hills of the Hegau. The impressive valley surrounding the young Danube takes you into the heart of Upper Swabia. Over rough, bare rocks, the winding Danube follows the gentle landscape of the Upper Swabian spa region and the charming Allgäu area. The snow covered peaks of the Alps are constantly in view, and always seem to be getting closer on this fantastic lake Constance and Allgäu bike tour. Back at Lake Constance you could even think they were looming right up out of the lake.

Map - Lake Constance & Hinterland Biketour

Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Constance

You start your Lake Constance & Hinterland Biketour in Constance, the largest city on Lake Constance, which still has a medieval feel to it today. In 1414, it was the scene of the only church council north of the Alps. A small museum commemorates the Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burned to death here. A few minutes' walk from the old town is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbor and popular park.

Day 2

Constance - Schaffhausen

approx. 50 km

Your biketour takes you along the Lake Constance cycle route through picturesque Swiss fishing villages and the Allgäu region. The route follows the shores of Untersee to Stein am Rhein with its frescoed medieval houses. Alternating several times between Germany and Switzerland, you reach the cantonal capital of Schaffhausen on the Rhine cycle route. The biketour passes the Munot fortress where the citizens competed building oriel windows.

Day 3

Schaffhausen – Rhine Falls – Radolfzell

approx. 50 km

After breakfast, you will cycle a short distance to the Rhine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. Your biketour continues uprivere to Stein am Rhein and on across the Höri peninsula next to the Lake Constance. Museums such as the Otto Dix House bear witness to the art tradition on Lake Constance. Along the way, there are always wonderful views of the monastery island of Reichenau and the volcanic landscape in Hegau.

Day 4

Radolfzell – Mühlheim / Fridingen

approx. 45 km + train ride or approx. 70 km

Today you will cycle into the Lake Constance hinterland and through the Hegau region with its extinct volcanoes towards the Danube. We recommend taking the train from Engen, where the trompe-l'œil style facades on the market square catch the eye, to Tuttlingen (not included) to avoid a climb of almost 500 meters. Those who are not afraid of a challenge can cycle through small and tranquil valleys to the Hegaualb and reach the highest point of the stage at 862 m at the summit of the Witthoh. On clear days, the views stretch from the Zugspitze to the four-thousand-metre peaks of the Bernese Oberland. On a rapid downhill ride, you reach the Danube shortly afterwards at Tuttlingen and then follow the Danube cycle route to Mühlheim.

Day 5

Fridingen – Scheer / Sigmaringen

approx. 40 - 55 km

You cycle through the Danube Gorge near Beuron, probably one of the most beautiful parts of your journey! Between Fridingen and Beuron, neither cars nor trains disturb your biketour pleasure on the Danube cycle route. Then the archabbey invites you to take a break. The biketour reaches through towering limestone cliffs directly along the Danube to Sigmaringen, the former capital of the Hohenzollern principality of the same name.

Day 6

Sigmaringen – Bad Waldsee

approx. 60 / 50 km

Today your biketour follows the Danube cycle route. First you will pass through Hundersingen, an influential Celtic town in the Bronze Age, which comes to life in the open-air grounds of the Heuneburg Museum. Then turn south into the Upper Swabian spa landscape. Your destination Bad Waldsee is a mud spa and Kneipp health resort with a baroque old town. The world's first and only spaetzle museum awaits your visit here.

Day 7

Bad Waldsee – Wangen im Allgäu

approx. 50 km

Today's biketour takes you from Upper Swabia into the beautiful Allgäu countryside to Wolfegg. Take a trip back to the time of farming families and day laborers in the extensive farmhouse museum. Via the climatic health resort of Kißlegg, you reach Wangen, the former imperial town. The townscape is characterized by old town towers, countless fountains and baroque inn signs.

Day 8

Wangen – Constance

approx. 50 km + catamaran trip

Today's biketour takes you along the Danube-Lake-Constance-Cycle-Route leaving behind the Allgäu back to Lake Constance hinterland. Your biketour today leads you through the hop-growing region of Tettnang a beautiful undulating landscape. Apple trees and orchards herald the arrival of Lake Constance early on. In Kressbronn you reach the Lake Constance cycle route, which you follow directly along the shore. From the promenade in Friedrichshafen, you have a wonderful view across Lake Constance to the Swiss peaks. The catamaran will take you back to Constance.

Day 9

Individual departure

After breakfast your Lake Constance & Hinterland Biketour is at the end. We are happy to extend your vacation at the lake.
