Family Cycling Holiday in Bavaria

Circuit in the Altmuehl Valley and Franconian Lakelands

Family with two children splashing water on a wooden dock at Brombachsee lake, with clear blue sky and green trees in the background.

This relaxing family cycling holiday in Bavaria takes you along quiet roads, away from the traffic, through Franconian lakelands and the Altmühltal valley. The lakes here, which were artificially landscaped, now appear quite natural. Dive into the water of the Altmühl and Brombachsee lakes, follow the traces of the Romans in Weißenburg and explore the romantic castle of Pappenheim. Not far from the shoreline you‘ll find not only thermal waters but also the most beautiful sandy beaches. Expect to see weird and wonderful rock formations along the Altmühl. And there‘s always a playground or picnic spot close to your route. This is a holiday that not only families will enjoy, but anyone who is wanting to get away from the hectic of everyday life.

Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Gunzenhausen

Your family cycling holiday in Bavaria begins in the middle of the Franconian Lake District, a popular vacation region. The Limes, the Roman border wall, once ran here. The medieval town fortifications, ornate baroque buildings and pretty half-timbered houses tell the long history of Gunzenhausen. The Altmühlsee lake is right on the edge of the town. Why not test the bathing quality for yourself?

Day 2

Round tour Brombachsee

approx. 35 km + boat trip

Today you will go on a trip all round Brombachsee Lake. There are many playgrounds along the cycle path. Laze around on one of the many sandy beaches or treat yourself to a refreshment in a beer garden. But you won't just be spending your day at the waterside, but right on the water! Enjoy a trip on Europe's biggest passenger Trimaran complete with restaurant and a playboat for children on the deck.

Day 3

Gunzenhausen – Weißenburg

approx. 40 km

Your family cycling holiday in Bavaria continues today along peaceful pathways through woods, fields and meadows to Pleinfeld. From there you cycle along the Swabian Rezat river, towards today's destination. Follow the tracks of the Romans in Weißenburg and explore the winding streets of the historic quarter. Parts of the impressive, mighty city wall are still intact.

Day 4

Weißenburg – Wettelsheim

approx. 30 km

From Weißenburg, you cycle along the Altmühl to Pappenheim Castle. The well-known saying "I know my Pappenheimers" refers to the inhabitants of the town, originally meant to praise them for their loyalty. From the castle walls, a fabulous panorama opens up over the Altmühltal valley, through which you cycle to your stage destination, the tranquil town of Wettelsheim just outside Treuchtlingen.

Day 5

Wettelsheim – Gunzenhausen and round tour Altmühlsee

approx. 40 km

This section is pleasantly short and flat. This leaves you enough time for a relaxing visit to the Treuchtlingen thermal baths or a refreshing dip in the Altmühlsee once you arrive in Gunzenhausen. You follow the Altmühl upstream and can enjoy the tranquillity and picturesque landscape of the valley before you cycle to Gunzenhausen.

Day 6

Individual departure

You can end your family cycling holiday in bavaria in comfort during breakfast. If you don't want to leave the Franconian Lake District just yet, we are also happy to extend your stay.
