The Rhine cycle tour in Switzerland is a real insider tip. The journey begins after a transfer from Constance on the picturesque streams of the Vorder Rhine and Hinter Rhine. You will be taken to the heights by bus and train and cycle leisurely downhill through the wonderful landscape. The three breathtaking gorges Roflaschlucht, Viamala and Ruinaulta will also inspire you. Following the Rhine, you cycle through the Principality of Liechtenstein, the fourth smallest state in Europe at 160 square kilometers. After a short detour into Austria, you reach Lake Constance. You cycle at a relaxed pace, mostly along the shore, discovering picturesque villages and towns worth seeing. There is always an opportunity for a dip in the cool waters. One of the highlights of your trip is certainly the Council City of Constance with its beautiful old town and lively harbor.

Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Constance

Welcome to Constance! The largest city on Lake Constance is the ideal starting point for your alpine Rhine bike tour in Switzerland. Whether by bike or on foot - stroll through the narrow streets of the Niederburg, the oldest district of Constance. Take a break at the harbor and watch the turning of the Imperia statue. The ascent to the tower platform of Constance Minster is also worthwhile. There are 193 steps up to a magnificent view over the city and  the Lake Constance. If you still have enough time, visit the Sealife Aquarium or the State Archaeological Museum (not included).

Day 2

Constance – Splügen – Bonaduz

approx. 45 km + transfer

The first stage of your alpine Rhine cycle tour in Switzerland starts in a relaxed manner with a transfer to the mountains of Graubünden. From Splügen, you get on the saddle and cycle leisurely downhill along the Hinterrhein. You pass two impressive gorges carved out by the river: the Roflaschlucht and Viamala. You too will be fascinated by the up to 300-metre-high smooth rock faces. The small municipality of Bonaduz is today's destination. Don't be surprised if you don't understand the locals right away - Rhaeto-Romanic is spoken here.

Day 3

Excursion to Disentis

approx. 55 km + train ride

Today there is an excursion to the Vorderrheintal. The train takes you to the monastery village of Disentis. On your bike you will discover the impressive landscape of the Ruinaulta  also known as the Grand Canyon of Switzerland. Wild gorges and rugged rocks were formed by a landslide thousands of years ago. Over time, the Rhine carved out a new path – the Rhine Gorge.

Day 4

Bonaduz – Vaduz

approx. 60 km

The Vorder rhine and Hinter rhine rivers converge in Reichenau. From here, you cycle along the Rhine towards Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland. The paths gently leads you downhill through the homeland of the children's heroine Heidi. Your destination is Vaduz  the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Its Castle, which still serves as the residence of its royal family, can be seen from afar. End the day in a cozy café in Vaduz's medieval old town.

Day 5

Vaduz – Rorschach / Arbon

approx. 65 / 70 km

The alpine Rhine cycle tour takes you back to Switzerland today. Here the Rhine flows into Lake Constance you now leisurely follow its shore. When you reach Rorschach take break at its historic bathing hut, which was built on stilts in the lake. How about a dip in the refreshing water? If you spend tonight night in Arbon, continue to cycle along the shore to Arbon, relaxed and refreshed. The former Roman settlement is now a popular excursion destination. Stroll along the long riverbank through the parks or through the historic old town with its late Roman castle.

Day 6

Arbon – Constance

approx. 30 km

The last stage takes you parallel to the lakeshore through the Swiss canton of Thurgau. You cycle past numerous apple orchards and through picturesque little villages. You will soon be back in Constance, the starting point of your journey. Would you like to cycle some more? The island of Reichenau, just a few kilometers away, is the ideal end to your bike tour. From the Hochwart you have a wonderful panoramic view of the island.
