Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Bragança

Welcome to Portugal! Begin your bicycle tour in the Douro Valley with a leisurely stroll through the charming old town of Bragança. Picturesque squares invite you to explore, whilst a small mountain stream winds its way idyllically through the town. High above the historic alleyways, the medieval castle stands imposingly.

Day 2

Bragança – Macedo de Cavaleiros

approx. 60 km

With every kilometre, Bragança’s imposing castle recedes a little further into the distance. Gentle hills, blossoming almond trees and silvery olive groves line your route. You’ll pass through quiet villages with traditional stone houses, spot storks in Valdrez and experience a landscape characterised by a special atmosphere of tranquillity and seclusion. After a final climb, the route leads gently down a cycle path to Macedo de Cavaleiros. The stage destination welcomes you with its unspoilt charm and a warm atmosphere.

Day 3

Macedo de Cavaleiros – Vila Flor

approx. 65 km

At the start, the route leads gently along a cycle path out into the wide open countryside. Before long, magnificent views open up over silvery-green olive groves and characterful cork oaks. One of the picturesque villages, adorned with roses, offers a welcome break – ideally with a slice of sweet chestnut cake. As the landscape gradually changes and becomes rockier, Vila Flor eventually comes into view. This impressive village delights with its narrow streets, charming squares and its very own Portuguese flair.

Day 4

Vila Flor – Vila Nova de Foz Côa

approx. 50 km

From Vila Flor, the cycle route takes you through the wine-growing countryside of northern Portugal. Between vineyards and ancient dry-stone walls, you’ll cycle down to the River Sabor. Following the river along terraced vineyards, you’ll reach its confluence with the Douro. An idyllic bathing beach invites you to take a refreshing break before you continue on to Torre de Moncorvo. On the panoramic road to Pocinho, spectacular views of the Douro Valley await you. The route continues through impressive vineyards to Vila Nova de Foz Côa – a stage full of scenic highlights and Portuguese wine-growing culture.

Day 5

Vila Nova de Foz Côa – Pinhão

approx. 60 km

In the morning, the cycle route takes you gently uphill along a scenic panoramic road through the fascinating wine-growing landscape of the Douro Valley. Vineyards, almond trees and olive groves line the route. After two more challenging climbs, the tour rewards you with spectacular views: far below, the Douro winds its way through the landscape, surrounded by the region’s famous terraced vineyards. This is followed by a varied descent down to Pinhão. Situated right on the banks of the Douro, this charming stopover welcomes you with its beautiful riverside promenade and Mediterranean atmosphere.

Day 6

Pinhão – Peso da Régua

approx. 60 km

The cycle route takes you through the sun-drenched vineyards of the Douro Valley and deep into the countryside. A long descent then brings you back to the banks of the Douro. High above the river, you’ll cycle along steep slopes lined with the famous port wine vines. The spectacular route finally leads to Peso da Régua, the heart of the Douro wine region. Here you’ll find a lively town centre, excellent restaurants and a relaxed harbour atmosphere – the perfect end to an impressive cycle tour through the Douro Valley.

Day 7

Peso da Régua – Porto by boat

Today you’ll discover the Douro Valley from the water. At 10 am, you’ll leave Peso da Régua and enjoy a unique perspective on Portugal’s famous wine region. Gliding downstream towards Porto, the boat passes steep vineyard terraces, idyllic riverside villages, cherry trees and dense forests. Two imposing locks, narrow rocky gorges and wide stretches of river ensure a varied experience. Finally, Porto, with its striking bridges, impressive architecture and historic old town, draws ever closer – a atmospheric conclusion to your cycle tour in the Douro Valley.
