Itinerary

Day 1

Individual arrival in Trieste

Trieste awaits with its rich array of sights and warm hospitality. Positioned at the crossroads of diverse trade and cultural currents, this vibrant port city showcases a fascinating blend of influences. Here, Roman architecture coexists harmoniously with elegant Austrian imperial buildings, creating a unique and captivating ambiance. Your rental bikes will be conveniently available at the hotel, ensuring you’re ready to explore all that Trieste has to offer.

Day 2

Trieste – Piran / Portorož

approx. 35 km + boat trip or approx. 65 km

Shortly after leaving Trieste, you'll cross the national border into Slovenia, cycling through renowned seaside resorts like Koper and Izola along the picturesque Slovenian Riviera. For those seeking a longer adventure, the route through the hinterland comes highly recommended. This path takes you through the Val Rosandra valley, a favorite among mountaineers and history enthusiasts, which has been a protected nature park since 1996.

If you prefer a shorter option, consider taking a boat from Trieste to Muggia, then cycling along the stunning coastline from there. Your destination for the stage is beautifully situated on a headland, offering breathtaking views and a charming atmosphere.

Day 3

Piran – Umag / Novigrad

approx. 35 – 60 km

Shortly after the beginning of this stage, you will arrive at the salt pans of Sečovlje, where traditional methods of sea salt extraction are employed during the summer months. Continuing your journey, you will leave Slovenia and cycle through the gently rolling hills of the Croatian region of Istria.

Your next stop is the charming port town of Umag, which is built upon the remnants of a Roman settlement—an aspect still visible in its historic town center. After exploring Umag, you’ll spend the night in Novigrad before continuing your ride along the stunning Croatian Mediterranean coast.

Day 4

Umag – Poreč

approx. 40 / 20 km

Following the coastline, today’s stage takes you first to Novigrad. This picturesque town is situated at the mouth of the Mirna River, where it meets the Adriatic Sea, and is built upon the remnants of an ancient settlement. The historic old town, originally an island, is encircled by a well-preserved 13th-century city wall.

From Novigrad, your journey continues to Poreč, where a visit to the Euphrasian Basilica is a must. Renowned for its exquisite mosaics, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a testament to the region's rich cultural history. Enjoy exploring these beautiful towns as you cycle along the stunning Adriatic coastline.

Day 5

Round trip from Poreč

approx. 35 km or day off

Today offers a variety of exciting excursions to choose from. For those eager to explore the hinterland of Istria, hopping on your bike is a great option. Alternatively, you can take a boat to Brijuni Islands National Park, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich biodiversity.

Another option is to enjoy a boat trip through the fjord-like Limski Channel, where stunning scenery awaits. If relaxation is more your style, you can spend the day lounging on the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the tranquil Mediterranean atmosphere.

Day 6

Poreč – Rovinj

approx. 55 km

Today marks your longest cycling stage as you journey past the picturesque Limski Canal towards Rovinj. This charming town, once a fishing village, is perched on a hill that extends into the Adriatic Sea, bordered by water to the west and southwest. The striking bell tower of the Baroque-style Euphemia Church is a prominent landmark that can be seen from a distance. Be sure to take a detour to the stunning Golden Cape, Zlatni Rt, known for its beautiful landscapes and serene beaches.

Day 7

Rovinj – Pula

approx. 55 km

To conclude your trip, you will cycle to the southwestern tip of the Istrian peninsula. Along the way, you’ll pass the Palud Bird Park, a delightful spot for nature enthusiasts. Your journey will lead you to Pula, the largest city in Istria County, which boasts a rich history spanning over 7000 years.

Take the time to stroll through the historic old town, where you can discover numerous Roman monuments that highlight the city's ancient heritage. The iconic landmark of Pula is the impressive amphitheater built by Emperor Augustus, a must-see that showcases the grandeur of Roman architecture.
